Pencil was curated for Alef Alef Alef, the Hebrew type foundry, to mark the opening of the academic year - a moment that touches every design school in the country simultaneously and is rarely marked as such. The exhibition treated the pencil as a deliberately humble organizing object: the one tool that every discipline at every school still begins with.
Thirty leading lecturers and professors from across Israel's art and design schools were invited to interpret the pencil as object, idea, or instrument. The participants ranged across architecture, illustration, industrial design, typography, and curation. Notable contributors included Galit Gaon, Hanan Delange, Kobi Franco, Claudette Zorea, Omer Polak, Yaacov Kaufman, and Vered Babai.
The exhibition was held in Gan Ya'akov at HaBima Square and was coordinated with a multidisciplinary cultural event - design pop-up shops with exclusive collections, and a music celebration - that turned the gallery into a meeting point for the schools and faculties at the start of their year.
